Is a Blog a serious way to help us shape the future of the National Scenic Byways Program? You bet! This is a Blog with a mission – to get each of us to stretch our minds a bit – to dream about what the byways program could be. The idea began with a conversation with one of the world’s most creative people – Kym Murphy of Disney. I told him that the National Scenic Byways Program was great, but with 126 designated routes and brochures and maps and videos and audio tours, the sense of adventure was ebbing. Which was just the challenge Kym needed. Soon we were in animated conversations about new ways to share the byways stories with travelers and byways yet to develop – how about the Roots of NASCAR Route, Kym wondered. And I wished you could be with us, reacting to Kym and adding your own ideas. That was when I knew we needed a place for some of our byways leaders to share their exciting byways visions in a way where you could provide feedback and then add your own ideas. And by “voting” on the ideas, we’ll even be able to gauge support for the ideas on the table. Perhaps this isn’t a replacement for traditional strategic planning – but then byways aren’t traditional roads. Even if you aren’t big on communications over the Internet, give this Blog a try and tell us whether it made you think in a new way!
