About the National Scenic Byways Coalition

The Scenic Byways Coalition, made up of more than 30 national organizations supporting the National Scenic Byways Program from its inception, has joined together with the U.S. Department of Transportation and the America’s Byways Resource Center to chart the course of the program for the next fifteen years — through 2021. 1Leaders in the transportation, recreation, conservation, tourism, heritage and economic development communities have revitalized the national coalition that led to the creation of the National Scenic Byways Program in 1991.

The Coalition will work to document the substantial accomplishments of the National Scenic Byways Program since its inception, including the results of thousands of competitively-awarded grants totaling some $300,000,000; and establish a widely-supported vision for the goals and priorities of the byways program over the next 15 years called “Byways 2021”.

Goals of the Coalition:

  • To achieve broad and active involvement of transportation, recreation, tourism, conservation, heritage and other organizations in the National Scenic Byways Program;
  • To highlight accomplishments of National Scenic Byways Program;
  • To stimulate discussion about, and consensus on, priorities and opportunities for the National Scenic Byways Program beyond 2009; and
  • To work together with members of Congress and byways advocates to develop a unified vision of the future of the National Scenic Byways Program, securing the continuation of the program long into the future.
